MNPC JAIF 2014 – Message 12 Posted on January 30th, 2014 by

Fair Goers:
There are now 175 of you!  This is the MOST ever that I have had registered before the deadline which is this Friday.  (That would be the most in 25 years!)
I know it is a pain when I decline your resumes on GustieJobs….but REALLY I want your resumes to be as powerful as possible!  So….just take the time to make the fixes.  Delete the declined resumes and upload new.
I now have 48 candidates registered who do not have resumes approved on GustieJobs. I know I have seen some of those 48 – so….lets get them done!
Question: “If the employer page says they will not be conducting interviews onsite at the fair, and I am still really interested in employment there do I still send them an email with my resume and cover letter telling them I will be stopping by their table at the fair?”
Answer: Send the letter and resume to the same person listed for the company on the Fair website.  In this case, do say, “I understand you are not interviewing at the Fair.  I am, however, very interested and I plan to stop by your booth at the fair.  If there is anything I should do before the fair, please let me know.”
Question: “How many companies should I send a pre-select letter to? I have quite a few that I am interested in.”
Answer: Send to ALL who are of interest to you!  You will not get interviews with all, but the more you send to the more likely you will get one!
Question: “When send the email to their listed contact, do I put my cover letter in the email message and then attach the resume with cover letter? Or just the resume?”
Answer: You can attach both the letter and the resume.  The email message can read: “Attached is a letter and resume regarding the MN Private Colleges Job and Internship Fair.  Should you have difficulty opening the attachments, please let me know.”
Question: “I looked at career opportunities listed on some of the companies’ website page and found jobs I could apply to. Would it be a waste of time to apply for one of those jobs then at the fair tell them I applied already? Or wait until after the fair to apply for any positions?”
Answer: Good for you!  It is GREAT to apply on line before the fair.  Otherwise at fair they will say “You need to go on line and apply.”  When they say that you can say, “Great! I have already done that.  What is the next step?”
I mentioned using InterviewStream to prepare for interviews.  Go to You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXlHDtM3bh4 to watch a video on how to use InterviewStream.  You can also find a pdf on interviewing athttps://gustavus.edu/servantleadership/careercenter/searching/documents/SeekingCareerOpportunitiesandInterviewing.pdf.
