Fair Update – Feb. 8 Posted on February 8th, 2013 by

Today, Friday, Feb. 8 is the last day to withdraw from Fair and get a refund.

Thank you to those telling me you will be at Prep Party! I have lots of room for mock interviews! If you told me you are coming to the Prep Party, but did NOT say if you want an interview – let me know! We are going to try to schedule those early next week.

Thanks to those who have let me know that they will attend the Target Info Session at 4:30 in the Diversity Center and the Epic Info Session at 4:30 in Linner Lounge – both next Wed. Feb. 13 before the Prep Party.

You have one chance to make a first impression….so for the info sessions and Prep Party at LEAST business casual dress! Suits are welcome! Bring your resumes!

Please thank the alums at the Prep Party for coming to help!

A great way to start your introduction at the fair is to thank employers: “Thank you for being here at the fair. It is a great opportunity for us! My name is…..etc.” You can use this next Wed at the Prep Party too!

At the Prep Party you will need to take turns on the speed networking introductions. We will have you do that by tables. Also, while you are waiting for your mock interviews, there will be alumni at the round tables offering info about their organizations, job search, job fairs, etc.

An alums advice to you for going to the fair:

  • “You should be well groomed, with men clean shaven and women moderate make up. Look sharp, be sharp!” “Ladies- if you’re wearing a skirt instead of pants, make sure the hemline is at or below the knee and no heels over 4 inches.” Do your research on the companies you plan to talk with and be ready to do research on any companies the day of the event that you may talk to last minute.”
  • Also….comfortable shoes! You will be on your feet on concrete for hours! High heels are fashionable – not a good choice for this event!

HINT: Go to the employers at fair who are of greatest interest as soon as possible in the morning. Do this so that you have a chance to get on interview schedules before they fill up. Then before you leave the fair in the afternoon….go back to the employers of greatest interest. Who will they remember? The people they saw at 9 a.m. or the one they saw at 2:30? Plus it shows interest and commitment!

I am interested to know if any of you are getting pre-select interviews scheduled. I am not sure if employers are doing that now or waiting until next week. Note that many employers will only offer preselects to those who send them letters and resumes. Has anyone gotten an interview or contact from an employer that you did not send to? They saw your resume on the fair site? Answers to these questions can go on the Career Development Facebook page.

Also – you know the video on the fair website? Gustavus staff created that several years ago. The fair is going to be filming at this fair to make a new video. We are looking for students willing to be interviewed at the fair to create that new video. If you are willing – please let me know! I would really like Gusties in it so that next year Gusties will know that this is their fair!
