Teaching English Abroad Posted on April 12th, 2012 by

One of the hardest parts about finding a job is separating yourself from other applicants. However, taking a position teaching English abroad is almost guaranteed to make you stand out from the pack. Although most consider teaching only for teachers, Madison Killen explains that there are 5 very good reasons for everyone to consider teaching abroad.
1.     You learn a new language: While knowing the language of the country you are teaching in is not necessary, it is likely that you will acquire some understanding of it before returning home. Being able to list fluency in another language is very impressive to an employer. Furthermore, knowing several languages is useful in the any job setting. Whether conversing with international trading partners or a non-English speaking patient, being able to speak the native language shows respect and helps to build trust.
2.     Understanding of different cultures: Because every culture varies, it is important to be extremely sensitive when dealing with people whose way of life differs from your own. Having first-hand experience with a different culture teaches you this sensitivity. Empathy allows for better communication and progress as well as for respect and understanding. Every company, regardless of their global presence, strives for these qualities.
3.     Communicating with those back at home: Sometimes things that are not in a foreign language can seem like they are to people who do not have the necessary background. With experience explaining concepts in a different language, clarifying ideas in your native language usually becomes easier.
4.     Gaining independence: Whether or not you consider yourself independent, if you choose to teach abroad, you will learn to be. Not only will be submersing yourself into what is likely to be a completely new culture, but you will also probably be doing it alone. Although this is a scary thought, it is important to remember that employers appreciate workers who can think and act without constant supervision.
5.     Learning how to be resourceful and adaptive: Employers look for workers how are able to switch between different tasks easily. They also look for people who can use the information and materials at hand to complete a job. Teaching in a different country will teach you how to do both.
