Meet Tony Spain! Posted on November 8th, 2010 by

By Emma Strand, 11/5/2010

If you’ve been in the Career Center recently, you may have noticed a new addition. Tony Spain has joined our staff to assist students with their online web presence and will be here part-time until the end of the semester.

Tony grew up in Janesville, Minnesota and is a 2009 Gustavus graduate. While at Gustavus, Tony served as Student Senate Co-President, giving him a unique perspective on student life at Gustavus. He was also the president of Queers and Allies, a member of the Gustavus Choir, a CSC employee, and a member of several faculty committees. For the past year and a half, Tony lived in Seattle and worked as an office manager at a law firm, where he looked over resumes and interviewed applicants for positions at the firm among other duties.

In today’s ever-changing job market, the internet is an important tool to find jobs, internships, and connect with potential employers. However, the internet can also be used against applicants who are not aware of their online presence. Facebook privacy settings are constantly changing, and employers have tools that allow them to see much more than students expect. Tony hopes to help students learn how to “employer-proof” their Facebook, correctly use LinkedIn and other professional networking sites, and develop resumes that highlight their skills and experience.

Consider scheduling an appointment with Tony today—he is very flexible, and has plenty of open appointments to discuss online tools and resumes. To schedule an appointment with Tony – Stop by the Career Center or call 507.933.7586. Additionally, on Tuesday, Nov. 9th Tony will be presenting “The Virtual You: Online tools to make connections, land internships, and start your career” from 6:00—7:00 p.m. in the Career Center. At this session, Tony will discuss how to use (and how NOT to use) online social and professional networking sites to create a professional online image, network with professionals, and find job and internship opportunities. Topics covered will include: Linkedin, Facebook, GustieJobs, Craigslist Jobs, Professional Networking Etiquette, and navigating the new job economy as a graduate of Gustavus.

We are very excited to have Tony in our office. He looks forward to meeting and making connections with you!
