Artists: Take the Reins! Posted on September 15th, 2010 by

We hear it all too often at Gustavus… “You’re a theater major? Good luck getting cast!” or, “He’s a good artist, but it’s hard to break into that world.” For the students on campus who dream of a career in the arts, it’s often difficult not to feel discouraged and as though the ability to succeed lies in someone else’s hands. In “The secret to success for artists, creatives” by Robert Pagliarini, this mentality is challenged. Pagliarini advises artists to stop worrying about other people—casting agents, record labels, or publishers—and just create. Many artists experience success simply by putting themselves out there. The article is filled with excellent examples of people who determined their own career path by taking control. After reading the article, stop by the Career Center. As you take control of your career in the arts, we can help you find cool internships or connect you to Gustavus alumni in the business. Many Gustavus graduates have gone on to experience great success in the arts, including 2007 graduate Brian Evans. Evans is a member of the Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater Company, and recently won the 2010 SAGE Award in the category of “Outstanding Performer.” Read Brian’s story here: http://news.blog.gustavus.edu/2010/09/15/alumnus-brian-evans-wins-minnesota-sage-award/.

So artists, don’t be discouraged! The Career Center is here to help you on your own creative journey.
Take the reins, and you’ll be amazed by the results!
