Volunteer Yourself Into a Job Posted on April 19th, 2010 by

Another option for after graduation – volunteering.  It’s a great way to stay sharp, use what you learned in the classroom, keep busy while job hunting, and possibly position yourself to nab a job when a position opens up!  You could very well be at the right place at the right time when your organization needs another employee.

Here’s how make volunteering meaningful professionally (because of course it’s meaningful personally!):
– Aim to volunteer around 20 hours a week.  With that amount of time you’ll be able to make a significant contribution to the organization, but will also be free to continue your job search.  Best not to put all your eggs in one basket…
– Choose your organization carefully, as many large corporations can’t legally hire volunteers.  Nonprofits can always benefit from volunteers and might to able to specifically tailor a project to your skills.  Small businesses are another good bet.
– Realize that for many companies a new person around the office can be more of a burden than a benefit.  When you make your offer of volunteering, show the company that you will be self-directed and not require much work on their part.  Have a plan ready to demonstrate how you will have a positive impact.
– Be indispensable and act like you are already an employee.  Show up on time, dress professionally, work hard and be willing to stay late or come early if needed.  Going the extra mile and being committed will be noticed!
– As usual, network, network, network.  Even if your organization doesn’t have a position open up, similar ones may and they would love someone with your volunteer background.
