Make it Work! Posted on April 6th, 2010 by

Good news!  Well, at least not bad news per se.
The recently released results of Michigan State’s Recruiting Trends study shows that employers will only hire about two percent fewer new college grads this year than last (after a staggering drop of 35 to 40 percent last year).
Deep breath.  This means that the job market for new grads has hit a bottom and, as the saying goes, things can only go up from here.  So chin up!
Under these circumstances, it’s becoming less and less unusual for new college grads to seek out internship opportunities after receiving their diploma.  Even unpaid internships.  And you know what?  That’s a brilliant idea!  Grads who are able to get any kind of internship are gaining experience in their field which should propel them to the top of the list when companies begin seeking new employees again.
It’s true that this job market is difficult and that you may not end up doing what you wished for immediately after you leave the hill.  But as Tim Gunn declares, “Make it work!”
