Job Search Doom Posted on March 25th, 2010 by

Spring semester is hectic – real, real hectic.  So hectic, in fact, that you may be tempted to slap your resume together, do the quickest proof-reading job ever, jot up a cover letter, and send the whole thing on its way.  If by some incredible chance you get an interview, it may be so hectic that you run late to meet the employer.  What has just happened?  Job Search Doom.
Typos and tardiness are the offenses most likely to kill your employment chances according to a recent survey we received here in the Career Center.  Typos and grammatical errors on resumes and in cover letters were deal breakers for 58% of respondents and a definite problem for another 41%.  Rolling in late for your interview was a deal breaker for 58% percent again and a problem for 39%.
The lesson?  Take a deep breath and write, read over, and read over again sloooowly both your resume and cover letter.  Send them to us here in the Career Center to make sure both are error free.  Set two alarms before an interview and make sure you know where you are going – or allow more than enough time to get there if you don’t.

Sure Spring semester is hectic, but don’t feed the madness.  Slow down, focus, and you’ll reap the results for a long time (aka when you are working in a stellar job for the next few years).
