Sustainable Farming/Sustainable Career Posted on January 22nd, 2010 by

With the introduction of Big Hill Farm here at GAC, we’ve heard more and more about “sustainable agriculture” – but I still wasn’t exactly sure what that meant.  Wikipedia (a true fount of knowledge) explains that sustainable agriculture, as a term, means an integrated system of plant and animal production practices having a site-specific application that will, over the long term:

  • satisfy human food and fiber needs
  • enhance enviornmental quality and the natural resource base upon which the agricultural economy depends
  • make the most efficient use of nonrenewable resources and on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls
  • sustain the economic viability of farm operations
  • enhance the quality of life for farmers and society as a whole

Whew!   Certainly sounds like a great thing, huh?  Well the SFA (Sustainable Farming Assoc. of course) is hosting it’s 19th Annual Conference February 20th at St. Olaf College focusing on “Sustainable Farming 2020: What does it look like? How do we get there?”  If this issue is of interest to you at all, the day will be packed with great sessions.

In fact Gustavus’ own Martin Lang and Ethan Marzhausen have produced a documentary titled “Farm Forward” that will be heavily featured at the conference (and showcases the work of student farmers at Big Hill Farm)!!

Come onto the CC for a registration form (Due Feb. 17th) or register online at www.sfa-mn.org – All this knowledge (and the delicious Farmer’s Market happening during lunch) can be yours for the student price of $10!  Make a day of it!
