Fashion Friday: The Basics Posted on September 25th, 2009 by

Knowing what to wear in the workplace can be perplexing.  Fashion Fridays (posting occasionally on Friday) are here to remedy all the confusion!  Feel free to write a question or send a picture of a possible work outfit and we will help answer and direct you.

Let’s start with the basics:  There are four major categories which workplace attire can fall into – Casual, Business Casual, Business Formal, and Conservative.

A breakdown:
Casual: Sandals, flip-flops, tennis shoes, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and jeans are worn on a regular basis.  These jobs are rare and you should not plan on stocking your work wardrobe with these articles – sorry!

Business Casual: Chinos, khakis, dress pants, skirts, open-toed shoes, sweaters, cardigans, and polos are all good options.  Bright, fun colors and patterns are acceptable.  Many workplaces encourage this form of dress on at least one day of the week, but what exactly falls into this category can be particularly mystifying.  We will try and shed some light on this area throughout the year.

Business Formal: Suit in a neutral color (light blue, dark blue, white, gray, black, dark brown, and khaki), a tie for men, and minimal jewelry for women.  This is also a popular workplace dress code.

Conservative: Matching suit in a dark neutral color (black, gray, or khaki), a nice tie for men, limited jewelry for women (small earrings or watch), and closed toe, polished shoes in a dark, neutral color.
