“Fall” into an Internship Posted on September 3rd, 2009 by

Welcome Back Gusties!
The start of the school year always brings an onslaught of activity – moving into your dorm or house, catching up with friends, and commencing classes. The Career Center encourages you to add another important task to your back-to-school to-do list: applying and registering for a Fall Internship!
Internships are an incredibly important part of your transcript, demonstrating your interest and knowledge of a certain field to a potential employer. In fact, internships are increasingly seen as one’s “new employee orientation” as training periods for new hires once you graduate are growing steadily shorter. Internships do not need to take up much of your time in order for you to benefit from the experience and receive academic credit:
An internship for 10-12 hours a week will receive .0.5-1 credit, one for 20 hours a week will receive up to 2 credits, and for a full immersion experience (40 hours a week) up to 3 credits will be awarded.
To register for a Fall Internship, and receive academic credit, you must act fast! The deadline for domestic Fall Internships is September 15, 2009. To get started, log-on to G-Net or visit sites such as Indeed.org or Idealist.org. The Career Center staff would love to help you find an internship if you would like some extra guidance.
Once you have secured an internship (many require applying with a resume and cover letter, and some require an interview), pick up a registration form from the Career Center. You will need to describe the position and its responsibilities, have your internship site supervisor provide a signature, and also have a faculty sponsor (typically your advisor) sign the form. Once the registration form is complete, the Career Center will handle the rest!
Internship assignments and evaluations will ensure that you get the most out of the experience.
For any questions please contact the Career Center at x7586. An Internship will be a rewarding and continually valuable experience for any Gustie to take part in!
